Hand-held ion mobility spectrometers

Abstract Ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) is a sensitive and rugged technique widely used for the detection of chemical warfare agents. Its strengths and weaknesses are discussed with particular reference to the viability of hand-held instrumentation. There are a number of developments that have been directed towards overcoming the identified weak points. These developments include replacement of the radioactive source, the use of gas chromatography for pre-separation, and further miniaturisation.
