Tight glycemic control in critically ill adults.

Published in 2001,the study reported that targeting normoglycemia in venti-lated patients in a surgical intensive care unit (ICU) re-duced the risk of in-hospital death by one-third. Althoughthesizeofthetreatmenteffectseemedimprobable,theun-derlyingconcepthadfacevalidityasimprovedglycemiccon-trol had been proven beneficial in other patients with se-vere acute illness.
