A mew method for spot speed-measuring is proposed based on MPEG (Moving Picture Experts Group) video compression technique. This method overcomes the shortcoming of radar speed-measuring method that there is a big error of measurement caused by harsh demand of measuring angle and disturbance of normal driving. After a driving video is obtained by VTR (Video Tape Recorder), the video process software “Virtual Dub” is used to obtain the time interval when the vehicle touched two detection lines marked on highway surface. The spot speed for the location of two detection lines can be approximately calculated out by the distance and the time interval. This method can receive satisfactory measuring precision by adjusting the distance between two detection lines. Finally, a compared analysis of measurement precision is made between this method and radar speed-measuring method by collecting vehicle speed datum in driving experiment.
