A Survey on Cognitive Agent Architectures

Abstract In recent years, there has been a lot of Interest in research and development of software agents and their applications. The software agents work on behalf of users/machines and offer better flexibility, re-usability, customization and adaptability. Several set of agents together form an agency that will be employed to perform set of tasks in a distributed environment. Cognitive agent is one of the type of software agent which is being widely used in many applications including personalized services, e-learning, e-commerce, telecommunications, etc. These agents assist in intelligent decision making similar human psychology in dynamic complex environments. They learn from the experience or the facts and predict the future beneficial conditions for the user/machine. Emerging distributed and wireless environments require intelligence in context sensitive behavior, adaptive reasoning and ability to monitor and respond to situation in real time. The cognitive agents can fulfill these requirements of complex distributed and wireless environments. This article presents cognitive agent architectures, issues associated with the design and construction of cognitive agents and some of the applications.
