Abstract The inherent inability to transfer the real business scene into the teaching environment has led to the increasing use of simulation exercises or games as a means of student centred learning. This paper describes the historical development of one such business exercise. Hogwash Ltd. which has been used over 60 times in the past decade both in universities and industry for teaching undergraduate, postgraduate and managerial level participants. In describing this development, which was planned around one of the new generation of small computers, the progressive role played by educational and computing objectives in the selection and application of computing equipment will be outlined as a means of drawing out general conclusions that may be of use in the development of similar exercises.
