Compression of intra-cavity chirped pulses from a cw passive mode-locked Ti:Sapphire lasera

Abstract Chirped pulses can be directly obtained from a cw passive mode-locked Ti:sapphire laser as a result of self-phase modulation inside the cavity. If a grating-prism pair is used, chirped pulses of 15.4 ps are compresed to 2.4 ps, assuming a sech 2 pulse shape. The pulses are almost at the transform limit for the observed spectral width of around 785 nm.
