Teaching Style and Textbooks.

Abstract The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between teaching style and textbook use and the influence of teacher ideology on teaching style. Questionnaires requiring teachers to develop a lesson related to a provided textbook chapter and to indicate their beliefs about students, knowledge, and teaching were administered to 103 teachers. Three main teaching styles were found: coverage, extension, and thinking. These styles are generally associated with textbook use but were used extensively both with and without textbooks. It was also found that teaching style is related to teacher ideology.
