Roadway Intersections, Lighting and Safety

In this article, the authors discuss research findings that justify the installation of roadway lighting. They describe a recently-conducted two-pronged study of roadway lighting that focuses on the statistical relationship between lighting and traffic safety and on the visual performance improvements related to lighting on the same types of intersections. The study used lighting presence data and daytime and nighttime crash data from more than 6400 roadway intersection in Minnesota. This research can help decision makers identify locations where the investment in roadway lighting would be of the greatest benefit.
