Towards a model for problem-based learning

ABSTRACT Problem-based learning is argued to be the most effective means of developing the general qualities of mind of the student, to securing an integration of academic and operational approaches to higher education and to instilling a high level of motivation and a capacity for active learning. Examples are given of the successful adoption of problem-based learning. Conditions necessary for developing a general model for problem-based learning are examined and the possible structure of a model is outlined.
