Management of Used Lithium Ion Batteries of EV in Dubai

The increased demand for electric vehicles leads to the presence of more dead or retired lithium-ion batteries, which is the most common chemistry used in the industry. This growth creates a number of challenges related to the recycling of batteries. Thus, appropriate disposal methods for lithium batteries need to be developed to avoid the possible negative environmental impacts. The objectives of this study are to analyze possible impacts of disposal of lithium ion batteries specifically in Dubai, and to explore the future of recycling methodologies for EV Lithium Ion Batteries (LIB) that can be implemented. Based on the conducted estimations of EV penetration level until 2030, a prediction of the waste stream of lithium batteries for the next 10 years is shown in this study. As per the prediction, it is suggested to apply various solutions to be implemented for the future through educational programs, infrastructure, and legislative framework adjustments. The study found that there will be a large number of lithium batteries needed to be recycled. It also indicates possible economical values which are associated with the estimation of LIB waste. Given the predicted growth, consistent infrastructure and regulations adequacies regarding LIB recycling need to be met to overcome the potential environmental impact and risks. Between three main methods implemented nowadays, it is recommended to implement the Hydrometallurgy method.
