ENERGY ABSORPTION BY THE PLASTIC DEFORMATION OF BODY STRUCTURAL MEMBERS

Calculations of the maximum compressive load and the mean crush load were made for various types of vehicle structural members. Sheet metal members with closed-hat section were chosen as a basic type by reason that these contributed to major collision energy absorption in the case of cars with unibody construction. Correlations between the static compressive loads and the dynamic compressive loads for these members were determined experimentally by the stress-strain relationship including strain rate sensitivity. Comparisons were made between the results of calculation by the mathematical model using these empirical equations and the experimental results for the crush characteristics of the members and the vehicle structures in collision.
