Role of microgrids in enhancing power system resilience

This paper aims at identifying the role of microgrids in enhancing the resilience of power supplies. The paper first distinguishes resilience from reliability so as to strengthen the need for resilience in the process of building Smart Grid. The paper then discusses in detail how microgrids are capable of eliminating the impact of power disruptions in the wake of extreme events. Given the unique benefits of microgrids in sustaining local power supplies, an integrated decision framework is finally developed for determining and coordinating measures to prepare for, respond to and recover from potential extreme events.
