Learning and adult education

In this chapter, the author stresses that there are many strategies for learning and warns against adopting any all-embracing theory of learning that implies exclusivity. He begins by examining the different learning theories, grouped broadly as behaviourist theories, cognitive theories, and humanist theories. He then goes on to discuss experiential learning and the learning cycle before outlining current thinking on learning styles. In his conclusion, the author suggests that there is no right group of learning theories. Different domains in which learning takes place require different strategies and the different theories each contribute to the list of factors that make for the effective teaching of adults.
