Real-time communication in shared-medium high speed lans

In March 1995, ISO decided to make DQDB the basis of the shared-medium ATM LAN. In June 1995, the IEEE Standards Board approved the Demand Priority LAN (DPLAN) as standard IEEE 802.12. This paper compares the performance of these shared-medium high speed networks to the performance of FDDI in terms of the price that normal priority traffic is made to pay for the support of real-time communication. Our performance study is based on simulations using a model of MPEG traffic as high priority load. Both FDDI and DQDB yield excellent results. In contrast to this, the DPLAN suffers from bad performance in case of extended networks and small high priority frames.
