Mechanical-Biological Treatment and residual waste landfill in France : a case study

In partnership with a local waste management public organisation (SDEE Mende, Lozère, France), the French Environmental Protection Agency ADEME started a research program involving several research laboratories: to evaluate the efficiency of the Mechanical – Biological pre-Treatment (MBT) of Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) and, to study, on a full-scale basis, the disposal and emissions behaviour of the pretreated waste. Under activity since july 2004, the site includes mechanical sorting operations, a Rotating Sequential Bioreactor (RSB), controlled aerobic stabilisation corridors, maturation platforms and a sanitary landfill site for waste disposal in separated cells.
