Plasticity at the mature neuromuscular junction

The physiological properties of the neuromuscular junction vary with its function in the animal. Synapses associated with fast- and slow-twitch muscles differ in transmitter output and fatiguability. These properties are modified after chronic periods of altered activity. Post-synaptic receptors may also be affected by usage. As Norman Robbins describes here, the neuromuscular junction is a useful model for examining the mechanisms underlying plasticity in the nervous system.
