Synthesis and characterization of a benzylviologen surface-derivatizing reagent. N,N'-Bis[p-(trimethoxysilyl)benzyl]-4,4'-bipyridinium dichloride

The preparation of N,N'-Bis(p-(trimethoxysilyl)benzyl)-4,4'-bipyridinium dichloride and the characterization of electrode surfaces functionalized with it are reported. Pt, W, n-Si, and SnO/sub 2/ electrodes derivatized with the named compound were characterized by electrochemical techniques and surface-sensitive spectroscopic techniques. Reaction mechanisms are proposed.
