Based on this, our theoretical and experimental work2 has revealed that a novel bistable mechanism, the index-modulation mechanism, exist in 2D-DSLs containing Kerr-form dielectric nonlinearity. It is the value of the index-modulation strength that will be perturbed by the interference of the transmission-diffraction light field in the medium, forming a positive feedback element to establish bistable behavior in the incident-diffracted relations of 2D-DSL. The bistable states of the four beams of diffracted light can be reached simultaneously in an orthogonal 2D-DSL, and the bistable states of more beams can be obtained in hexagonal 2D-DSL or 3DDSL, which may be favorable to design of miniaturized and compact bistable devices.
