PerfSDL: Interface to protocol performance analysis by means of simulation

This paper presents a new approach to test the performance of communication systems that contain protocol components. This type of performance testing covers timing properties and identifies performance bottlenecks for range of parameter settings and assesses the measured performance. The general idea of this paper is to integrate protocol performance into system performance by providing appropriate correlation and feedbacks. PerfSDL – an extension of SDL – is an interface to describe protocol components prior to performance testing in a manner that leads to compact testing with maximum benefits of protocol knowledge. The new language adds new constructs that enable the adaptation of SDL systems to the requirements of performance testing by means of simulation without losing speed and efficiency. A powerful simulation tool – PlasmaSIM - was used and first results of the description and execution of performance tests will be presented.
