Building a Foundation for Effective Teaching and Learning of English: A Personal Perspective on Thirty Years of Research.

This article began as my acceptance speech for the 1998 David H. Russell Award for Distinguished Research in the Teaching of English. In it, I frame the evolution of my own work and use my work over time as a mirror of a variety of features within the field as a whole.
