Image Artefacts in Computerized Tomography

In diagnostic radiology artefacts are defined as areas of display which do not represent the actual density distribution in the examined object. CT scanners of the first generation-such as the EMI brain scanner with the 160x160 picture matrix-quite frequently present various typical image artefacts. These artefacts may considerably degrade the information content of a tomogram. They may even occasionally falsify image morphology to an extent which bears the risk of wrong diagnosis.
