Stone reinforcement by induction of calcite crystals using organic matrix macromolecules. Feasibility study

The precipitation of calcite inside samples of a bioclastic limestone was tested utilizing a mineralization process mediated by the organic matrix extracted from mineralized hard parts of marine organisms. Preadsorption of soluble acidic matrix glycoproteins extracted from the shell of the mollusk Mytilus californianus was found to increase the amount and depth of penetration of calcite crystals formed inside the stone pores. In contrast to experiments performed without preadsorbed proteins, the crystals were also firmly connected to the stone. A significant decrease in the stone porosity was observed, following new crystal formation. Such a treatment should improve the stone bulk mechanical strength.
