A solution of the inverse scattering problem for the Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equation by the method of separation of variables

Abstract We show that the method of separation of variables can be employed to solve the appropriate scalar Gelfand-Levitan equation. This produces many new solutions (with soliton interactions) and, in particular, introduces a new rational-exponential soliton.
