Early Human Factors Research In the mid-1980s NASA aerospace human factors researchers identified a basic problem that air traffic controllers confronted when attempting to use 3-D displays: the perspective displays, though intuitively interpretable, could impair situational awareness insofar as they could obscure the two-dimensional distance between aircraft, impacting controller’s principal task of maintaining safe aircraft separation.
