One out of every six discharges from U.S. hospitals is for children 17 years and younger; the majority of these are newborn infants. This Statistical Brief updates previously published information for 2006 and also provides comparisons with data from 2000. Over the past decade, there were some concerns that hospital care for children might be affected by a number of events, especially the recent economic downturn, which started in 2008, and the H1N1 influenza pandemic in 2009.
