Post-pill amenorrhea: diagnosis and management.

Postpill amenorrhea is usually uncommon. All steroids have been connected with the problem. It has been shown by some researchers that duration of therapy with pills has little relationship with the incidence of amenorrhea. Most cases will correct themselves spontaneously within 12-18 months. For patients who are anxious to conceive evaluation of the problem could be initiated after 6 months. Clomiphene is the most successful agent to use for ovulation stimulation. Other drugs which can be used are: prednisone human chorionic gonadotropin and human menopausal gonadotropins. Patience is necessary for the cure. Menstrual dysfunction prepill precedes most cases of postpill amenorrhea. For this reason patients with known prior menstrual irregularity and unproved fertility are perhaps not ideal pill patients.
