Dynamic hardness testing of metals

Abstract Possibilities for the use of hardness testing as a means for assessing important material properties are reviewed. The use of a portable dynamic hardness tester to facilitate this procedure, and its advantages over standard static tests are discussed. Available portable hardness testers are explored and the mechanics of a tester based upon a bouncing indenter are discussed. A working model of this tester is then analysed, its shortcomings highlighted and possible solutions given.
