Performance Optimization of Hydraulic Turbine by Use of Variable Rotating Speed

The operating regimes of an hydraulic generating set with a reaction hydraulic turbine are examined at variable rotational speeds. A procedure for analysis of the operating regimes of generating sets at variable rotational speeds and an algorithm for control of the set, which makes it possible to realize the following advantages of operation at variable rotational speeds, are cited: the possibility of improving the operating efficiency of the hydraulic turbine, and expansion of the operating power range due to reduction of hydrodynamic effects on the generating set. Theoretical positions are substantiated by results of computer modeling.
