Relation Between Characteristics of Blood‐Group Antibodies in Vitro and Associated Patterns of Red‐Cell Destruction in Vivo

THE survival of very small amounts (I nil.) of incompatible red cells can be studied by labelling them with 51Cr or 32P. Two patterns of climiiiation are commonly observed: firstly, the removal of all or some of the injected cells with a haIf-time of less than 5 minutes; secondly, the removal of all of the cells with a half-time of about 20 minutes (Mollison and Cutbush, 1955). Further investigations have shown that these and other patterns are closely related to the characteristics, defined by tests in zlitro, of the blood-group antibody concerned. The purpose of the present paper is to describe these relationships.
