Prenatal sonographic diagnosis of bronchopulmonary foregut malformation.

Bronchopulmonary foregut malformations are rare con• genital anomalies of the embryonic foregut. Fewer than 33 cases of this disorder have been reported.1 The disorder commonly presents in the first eight months of life with symptoms of respiratory distress. 2 It is usually diagnosed by chest x-ray and upper gastrointestinal series. 3 We report a lung mass of increased echogenicity that was diagnosed by a third trimester antenatal ultrasound. This was postoperatively determined to be a bronchopulmonary foregut malformation. Other con• genital pulmonary anomalies that have a similar appearance on antenatal ultrasound and have been previously reported in the literature include cystic adenomatoid malformation of the lung type III, bronchial atresia, and pulmonary sequestration. Bronchopulmonary foregut malformation must be added to the differential diagnosis of mass lesions in the fetal thorax that can be detected by antenatal ultrasound.
