The intrinsic resolution of X-ray imaging plates

Abstract The spatial resolution of BaFBr:Eu 2+ X-ray imaging plates is limited by the scattering of light within the granular structure of the screen. In this work we have examined the scattering of the luminescence emission within the phosphor, which gives rise to the intrinsic limit to a screen's resolution. We find by comparison with measurements made on CaSO 4 :Dy 3+ screens that the plate-like crystal habit of BaFBr gives rise to a poorer intrinsic resolution. Of special note are the diffuse wings to the point spread function of BaFBr screens, which give significant signal levels out to ± 750 μ m at a surface loading of 18.8 mgcm −2 .
