17 – Case study

Publisher Summary This chapter illustrates a case study and is based upon a number of individual installations undertaken by an installer. The names of the buildings are totally fictitious but the calculations, design, decisions, specifications, and documentation packages are based upon real installations for real customers. The chapter describes the typical installation from the design stage to the final stage of detailed installation planning. The planning and design if controlled appropriately can result in smooth running of the actual installation. In context to network requirements, the network is to be installed at an industrial plant. The installation is considered in three separate phases, the first being campus or inter-building cabling, the second being backbone cabling within certain of the buildings, and the last phase being the provision of optical fiber-to-desk locations in other buildings. Common nomenclature is used for all buildings, floors, and nodes. This essentially helps in meeting future requirements without the need for change to the underlying structure.
