Biomarkers Associated With Severe COVID-19 Among Populations With High Cardiometabolic Risk

Key Points Question What are the mediators linking cardiometabolic risk factors and severe COVID-19? Findings In this genetic association study that used mendelian randomization to analyze 235 biomarkers in samples from 22 101 individuals, the biomarker kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1) was associated with reduced COVID-19 hospitalization and KIM-1 circulating levels were upregulated with increased body mass index (BMI). Meaning These findings suggest that KIM-1 may attenuate the association of BMI with COVID-19 severity.
