Comparative analysis on a shunt active power filter with different control strategies for composite loads

This paper exhibits a relative investigation of different governing methods on a shunt active power filter for harmonics and VAR compensation for a balanced three phase system connected to a composite load. Three techniques, namely, instantaneous active and reactive power method, instantaneous active and reactive current control method and unit vector template method are used for the source current harmonic suppression and reactive power compensation for a combination of linear and nonlinear loads. The control techniques are compared on the basis of power quality parameters such as harmonic compensation capability, quantitative analysis of reactive power compensation, power factor improvement and total rms content of source current. Various simulation results are presented to validate the performance of the active power filter.
