Contribution of cervical trabecular bone to the strength of the proximal femur

Summary form only given. An investigation has been carried out to assess the contribution of cervical trabecular bone to the strength of the proximal femur. Pairs of cadaveric femurs were radiographed and tested mechanically to determine the breaking strength. Before testing, the trabecular bone was removed from the neck of the left femur of each pair. Both oblique cervical and subcapital fractures were produced. No significant difference was seen in the breaking strength of the cored femur when compared to the right member of each pair.<<ETX>>
