Going Private: The International Experience with Transport Privatization

This book describes the diverse transportation privatization experiences of many countries in Europe, Asia, and Latin America, as well as experiences of the United States. The movement of transportation services and facilities from the public to the private sector was led by the British and the French. The authors focus on the three most common forms of privatization: 1) selling an existing state-owned enterprise; 2) using private, rather than public, financing and management for new infrastructure development; and 3) contracting out to private vendors public services previously provided by government employees. The political, economic, and social dimensions of privatization are addressed and many case studies are provided.
