Advanced Protection Systems (APROSYS)

Secondary (or passive) safety constitutes one of the most important strategies to reduce the traffic trauma problem. Much has been achieved in the past in this field including seatbelts, airbags, crashworthiness of vehicle structures, helmets, pedestrian friendly vehicle fronts etc. An important aspect here is the integrated approach with primary (or active) safety, the so-called area of integrated safety. As a first implementation of the R and D needs in this area an European Integrated Project (IP) has been developed, named Advanced Protection Systems (APROSYS), by partners in PSN jointly with EUCAR and in co-ordination with a series of other IP's particular focusing on primary safety issues. APROSYS started in April 2004. In this presentation the main achievements of APROSYS in its first 2 years will be presented. Special attention will be paid on the new side impact barrier and the new small female side impact dummy for evaluation of impact protection in side collisions, the developed tools and methods such as generic car models used in virtual testing environments, and an innovative pre-crash system for side impact protection of passenger cars (A). Only abstract (as above) is available from the conference proceedings. For the covering abstract of the conference see ITRD E212343.
