Energetic Constraints on Home-Range Size

Our analyses demonstrate that the different energetic requirements of passerines and rodents may explain some differences in home-range size, but that the relationship between energy needs and feeding area is not simple and is related to species' feeding preferences. We emphasize that the measures used are subject to considerable error, both from different techniques employed by different investigators, and from the different functions of home-ranges in different species. Nevertheless, this error is small in relation to the total variation under study, and there is no reason to suppose that it will bias results in any particular way.
