"Judaean" or "Jew"? How should we translate Ioudaios in Josephus?

This chapter notes that Josephus himself gives us quite an explicit and prestigious piece of evidence for the claim that Ioudaios denotes a person by reference to his or her geographical origin. Passages which clearly take Ioudaios to mean Judaean are few and scattered in Josephus' later writings. In contrast, there is more evidence for Ioudaios meaning Judaean in the context of his writings about the Roman-Jewish war of 66-73/74CE, which culminated with the destruction of the Second Temple and ended with the fall of Masada. Keywords: Ioudaioi; Josephus; Judaean
