Designing the System

In this chapter a discussion of how to get down to the business of putting together a data communications system is presented. It is assumed that the particular application has been completely described. This must be done because the data communications system is highly applications dependent. One can only design the general type of system at considerable and unnecessary expense. This is not to say that one should not design systems in a modular way. The design should be general enough to allow for future expansion in equipment or services required. It is imperative that the system designer keep costs in mind at all times.
