A model of cognitive information retrieval for ill-structured managerial problems and its benefits for knowledge acquisition

Current computerized retrieval methods fall short for finding information to resolve ill-structured managerial problems. To overcome the shortcomings of current retrieval methods, this paper proposes a more cognitive approach by integrating concepts from management and knowledge acquisition and grounding the overall discussion in the empirical findings of cognitive science. However, instead of using knowledge acquisition to develop an expert system for general use, this paper addresses the acquisition of a manager's cognitive model for the creation of a personal executive support system that models the superior information discrimination abilities experienced managers possess and thereby avoids the inefficient and ineffective process of traditional database queries.<<ETX>>
