Integration in Hospital Information Systems. The Microbiology Lab as an Example

Abstract Giessen University Hospital has moved from a centralized mainframe information processing to an increasingly diversified network of local applications serving the needs of each department. The hospital information system is conceived as the glue which integrates those subsystems to a functional unit. In this paper we will show exemplarily how integration of a new area, in our case the department of medical microbiology, into the hospital information system has been achieved with a three step integration concept.
