Heatshockprotein 70(HSP70)andcomplement C4 genotypesinpatients withhyperthyroid Graves' disease

SUMMARY Thegenetic polymorphisms oftheheatshockprotein 70(HSP70) andcomplement componentC4 wereinvestigated in90patients withhyperthyroid Graves' disease and92normal control subjects. The8-5-kb PstIHSP70allele was strongly associated withGraves' disease whencomparedwith controls (P<0-001). Thepresenceofthe8-5-kb PstIHSP70allele was strongly associated witha deletion oftheC4A geneinbothpatients andcontrols (P< 00003andP<000005respectively). However, intheabsence ofC4Agenedeletion, thefrequency ofthe8-5-kb PstIHSP70allele was still significantly higher inpatients whencompared withcontrols (P< 004). Theseresults suggestthatthe HSP70locus may have an immunological role toplayinautoimmune hyperthyroid Graves' disease.
