Abstract This paper reviews some recent applications of automatic optimisation techniques used in the design of turbomachinery components in conjunction with high fidelity CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics), in particular focusing on the SOFT-PADRAM-HYDRA design system (SOPHY) used in Rolls-Royce. SOPHY is a fully integrated flexible aerodynamic design optimisation system. The main elements of the SOPHY system are discussed herein and application examples are presented from the Aerospace, Energy and Marine side of the business.
