Abstract : Axial-flow pump noise generation was analyzed using dimensional analysis and aerodynamic theory, resulting in tentative design and operating criteria for low noise axial-flow pumps. Pump noise sources were also discussed in general terms. Problems concerning pump -generated acoustic pressure measurements, primarily piping system effects and turbulence, are also discussed. Future work will include verification of low noise design criteria for axial and centrifugal pumps, improvement of pump noise measurement, and development of novel pump designs having low noise characteristics.
