The history of Central European Jewish communities has been above all presented as a success story. Social advance and acculturation were prominent features in this picture. However, poverty has been for many a constant presence in their lives, and in Eastern Europe, it dominated Jewish lifeworlds. This is the point of departure of the contributions to this volume: Which factors caused Jewish poverty, how did it impact individual and communal lives, how was it fought?
