Indicadores de qualidade da água e biodiversidade do Rio Jaguari-Mirim no trecho entre as pequenas centrais hidrelétricas de São

The present paper aims to assess the physical and chemical characteristics of the river Jaguari Mirim waters, its margins degradation, the structure of the benthic communities and ictiofauna in order to define indicators able to reflect the effect of the small power plants of São Joaquim and São Jose reactivation upon the natural biota. Collections had been carried out in September, 2008 in eight stations along the river stretch between the two power plants. The increase on the concentration of phosphate nutrients in the water, and the settling of a low number of species were verified. Dominant species were forms resistant to environmental stress. Benthic community presented low diversity and low relative abundance indicating the dominance of opportunistic taxa such as Oligochaeta, Chironomidea and Bivalvia. Ictiofauna samples showed small sized captures and low variety of “morfotypes”. Such results suggest that the analyzed river stretch constitutes an area profoundly impacted.
