Use of the results of high-speed surveys for cost effective road maintenance

The benefit of collecting road condition data at normal road speeds in terms of coverage and survey costs has been recognised for a number of years. The importance of pavement management systems is now also recognised both in terms of managing the large volumes of data collected by these surveys and maximising the use of the data for budget prediction, taking account of maintenance policies and the use of appropriate performance models which estimate deterioration. This paper describes research to define appropriate intervention levels and deterioration rates for use with pavement management systems, and presents a case study to show its application.
