Planar optical sensor for trichlorofluoromethane

We demonstrate a planar-optical Bragg grating based chemical sensor device for the detection of the environmentally harmful, highly ozone-depleting-substance trichlorofluoromethane. By applying an approximately 100 nm thin layer of differently substituted cyclodextrin-derivatives on top of the sensitive region of the silica-based Bragg grating sensor, supramolecular host-guest interactions of the oligo-saccharide affinity material and the chlorofluorocarbon analyte are favored, leading to a significant increase of the sensitivity towards the airborne pollutant. The all-optical sensor thus allows a reliable online in-situ detection and measurement of trichlorofluoromethane in real-time that features a limit of detection of down to 25 ppm.
