This special issue contains 11 papers on the structure causes and consequences of the demographic crisis that occurred in the former Soviet Union and Eastern Europe during the period 1990-1995. These papers were selected from those presented at a conference held at the Harvard Institute for International Development in January 1998. The primary focus is on the decline in life expectancy.
